How To Choose A Bird Cage

What is the best bird cage for your type of pet bird? It depends on several factors what might be best for your bird and how much you want to spend for a cage. So I have started this site to provide the information you need to make that choice a whole lot easier.

You will find pages here on several different types of birds with an outline of the cage requirements of each. Below are some of the things you will find more detailed information about...

How Big A Cage Is Needed For My Bird?

Bigger is absolutely better. From finches to parrots or macaws, birds love lots of room. They need to stretch and flap their wings without hitting things at a bare minimum.

What Shape Of Cage Is Best?

Longer is much better than tall and narrow. Birds like to fly from one side of the cage to the other so the longer the better. But for taller birds the cage height must be adequate for them as well.

What Materials Make Better Cages?

Usually the more expensive cages are made from the best materials. Stainless steel for example is excellent, as is powder coated metal. Acrylic plastic or cages made of thin wire will not hold up as well as those made from more expensive materials.

What Bar Spacing Is Appropriate For My Bird?

The bar spacing depends on the particular bird. You will find these specs on the page for your specific bird. In general you don't want the pet to get its head or wings, etc. caught between the bars and injure itself.

How Easy Is The Cage To Clean?

A cage will have to be cleaned regularly so the easier it is to clean the better for you and your bird. Wide doors that give you easy access, trays that fit the bottom and can be pulled out readily, are both  good ideas. Plastic or wooden cages will be harder to clean than those made of metal.

Will The Door Latch Securely And Easily?

You don't want your friend picking the latch, opening the door, and flying off. Make sure the latch is one that the bird won't be able to pick open.

In addition to the above items on choosing a bird cage we will also look at some of the different places to get them and what you might expect to pay for one. This site is one in progress and I will continue to add pages that might be of benefit to you(and your bird). Thanks for stopping by and I hope you will be able to find the best possible bird cage.
