Macaw Pet Birds
Macaw Pet Birds: Invest in Macaws for a Lifetime of Fun
Macaws are the epitome of 'tropical' in the average American eye. Any ad that advertises tropical destinations, clothing, or merchandise usually sports some poor Macaw pet birds being trained to do tricks as is their specialty, probably just as exhausted from the day's work as the actors involved in the advertisement as well. They are the epitome of tropical for many reasons; first of all, their brilliant colors drive home the idea of bright, exotic environments and ecosystems that tend to attract people to tropical destinations and products.
The Look of Macaw Pet Birds
The run of the mill Macaw pet birds are normally colored brilliantly, either Blue and Gold or Blue and Yellow with an emerald green forehead and crown. Their black beard is also a trait that moves from species of macaw to species of macaw, as do their black-striped cheeks. Outside of that, different species of Macaw pet birds can look differently, with the same ice-blue or dark blue eyes (the color depends on their age).

These Blue and Gold/Blue and Yellow Macaw pet birds are the most widely available macaw. They are great pets for people, as they don't take heartbreak to not being in the wild as some parrots do. They love people and are extremely curious about people and their environment. They are loyal, dedicated pets who love their humans and will do anything to entertain them. Contrary to popular belief, macaw pet birds are also extremely charming and affectionate, and even though they may chew up everything you hold dear to your heart they make wonderful human companions.
Beware of the Chewing
Chewing is a problem that most pet parrots have. In the wild, macaws are able to chew on anything their heart desires, but in captivity their chewing habit could cost you your favorite desk, sofa, or houseplant. It is important to have this chewing under control because if not watched, they can easily chew on the wrong thing and be poisoned; that is not something that anybody wants to have to deal with, so to avoid it keep them under a watchful eye and move anything away from their reach that could pose harmful to them or a loss for you. Give them plenty of toys to keep them busy and items that are safe for them to chew on, so they can use this urge in a more constructive way.
Responsible Macaw Pet Bird Ownership
If you are interested in being the owner of a Macaw, there are a few things that you should consider. Macaws can become very stressed and depressed if they are left alone for a long period of time. If your job has you traveling a lot or you just love those tropical vacations (that made you buy the bird in the first place), you may want to reconsider your ownership of a Macaw. Macaw pet birds are like any other companions and need a certain amount of time and your attention to survive. They are best to get as babies so that they can be bonded to you for life, but if you decide to go with one, be sure that you are ready to commit for the long haul—they live a long, long time.
