Amazons
A large parrot from South America. Some of the common types of Amazons are Yellow Nape, Blue Front, and Double Yellow Head. They can be quite loud, talkative, affectionate, and ill tempered at times.
African Greys
Thought to be the most intelligent of all the parrot types. They not only talk but may even understand what they are saying. Some African Greys have been known to have vocabularies of over 900 words.
Macaws
Another bird from South American and the largest type of parrot. They are smart and very affectionate pets.

A South American bird that is related to the Macaw but much smaller in size. The best talkers are the Aratinga varieties.

Common to Australia and the islands near there. These birds are known for the crest of feathers on their head. They are intelligent, playful, talkative, and great at mimicking.
Cockatiels
A smaller bird with a crested head and interesting colors. They are mostly found on the continent of Australia. An inexpensive bird that is easily tamed and can be taught to talk.
Parrolets
Small birds that are native to Ecuador and Peru. Their talking abilities are limited.
Quakers
A small parrot that grows to 10-12 inches in length. Quakers are native to parts of South America. They are mostly green in color and are sometimes referred to as a "Grey Breasted Parakeet". Quakers make very cheerful and playful pets and are reasonably priced.
Lovebirds
The smallest bird of the parrot family with mostly green coloring and sometimes with red coloring on their face. They are native to Africa and can be very playful. Very poor talking ability but they can make great pets.
Eclectus
These birds have very unusual colorings and make great pets. They can be trained to talk as well.
Budgies/Parakeets
These birds are common in pet stores and are very inexpensive. They are native to Australia and make great pets and they have beautiful color patterns. Most parakeets found in pet stores have not been tamed, so if you can find some that have been hand raised, they will be much tamer and more sociable.
